How 【Attack】 works

An 【Attack】 effect triggers when this Unit declares an attack — before blocks and before damage. Buffs from Attack triggers (AP boosts, keyword grants) are live for the whole battle, which is exactly why the opponent's blocking decision has to account for them.

The trigger needs an attack declaration, so a Unit that sits back defensively never turns its 【Attack】 effect on. These cards want to be swinging every turn to pay for themselves.

Playing around it

Read the board's attack triggers before deciding to block: a Unit that grows or gains <First Strike> when attacking can turn what looked like a safe block into a losing battle. Conversely, when you hold removal, catching an attacker before its declaration — during your own turn — denies the trigger entirely.
